Fifth suspect held in Gurdaspur grenade attack: DGP

The Punjab Police have arrested a fifth suspect in connection with the grenade attack on the Gurdaspur City Police Station, officials said on Wednesday. The arrest follows an ongoing security drive ordered by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to curb militant activity and ensure public safety. The suspect, identified as Mohan Singh from Ramuwal village in Bathinda, was detained by Counter Intelligence officers in Bathinda with support from Gurdaspur district police. His arrest comes days after four others — Pradeep Kumar, Gurdit, Naveen Chaudhary and Kush — were held over the 25 November attack, in which a grenade was hurled at the police station at around 7.30pm. Police earlier recovered a P-86 hand grenade and two pistols from the group.

Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said preliminary investigations suggest Mohan Singh was in touch with Pakistan-based, ISI-linked gangster Shehzad Bhatti and acted on his instructions to carry out the attack aimed at creating fear in Punjab. The DGP added that the investigation remains active, with teams pursuing leads to dismantle what officials believe to be a wider network.

AIG Counter Intelligence Bathinda, Avneet Kaur Sidhu, said technical and human intelligence inputs led to the suspect’s arrest. Gurdaspur SSP Aditya said police recovered a .32-bore pistol, ammunition and a black Splendor motorcycle allegedly used in the attack.

A case had already been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Explosive Substances Act at Gurdaspur City Police Station.
