Prime suspect fled to UAE within hours of Punjab influencer’s murder

Punjab Police are seeking the deportation of Amritpal Singh Mehron, a self-proclaimed radical Sikh leader, after he allegedly fled to the United Arab Emirates within hours of orchestrating the murder of a popular social media influencer. Kanchan Kumari, known online as ‘Kamal Kaur Bhabhi,’ was strangled to death on 9 June in Bathinda after being lured under the pretext of a promotional event. The 30-year-old accused, a resident of Moga, boarded a flight from Amritsar shortly after the murder, Senior Superintendent of Police Amneet Kondal confirmed. A lookout circular has been issued, and officials are working with international authorities to facilitate his return to India.

Mehron is also under investigation for allegedly issuing threats to at least two other women with significant online followings, raising fears of a wider pattern of targeted harassment. “The planning was meticulous,” said SSP Kondal. “He used a car rally invite to draw her in. The killing was carried out by his associates while he supervised remotely.”

The two men accused of carrying out the murder, Jaspreet Singh and Nimratjit Singh, were arrested on 13 June. Another two suspects, including Ranjit Singh, have been named in the FIR and are being pursued.

Kanchan, who had amassed a large following on social media through her outspoken videos and lifestyle content, left her Ludhiana residence on the day of the incident, unaware that she was being led into a trap. Her body was later discovered in a parked vehicle near Adesh University in Bathinda, sparking outrage online and renewed calls for stronger protections for digital creators.
