In a major crackdown on cross-border drug trafficking, Punjab Police have busted a well-organised narco-hawala network and recovered 15 kilograms of heroin in Ferozepur, DGP Gaurav Yadav said on Friday. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Director General of Police (DGP) said that the seizure was made following credible intelligence inputs and a covert operation by the Ghall Khurd police station.
One accused, identified as Ramesh Kumar alias Mechi, has been arrested and booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Police are now tracing both the forward and backward linkages of the smuggling syndicate. Officials said a special focus is being placed on unearthing the hawala channels that played a key role in managing the cartel’s financial operations. The Punjab Police said the operation is part of an intensified drive to dismantle drug networks, choke supply chains, and uphold the state’s goal of a drug-free Punjab. Further investigation is ongoing, and more arrests are expected.
