Amritsar, November 26
A snatcher, involved in two separate thefts targeting Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), sustained a bullet injury while attempting to flee from police custody in Amritsar. The incident occurred after the accused, identified as Suraj alias Mandi, snatched a rifle from police personnel and posed a threat, prompting police to act swiftly, said Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav.
Amritsar Commissionerate Police neutralised the situation by shooting Suraj in the leg, preventing any harm to police or bystanders. The snatcher was arrested by the Civil Lines Police team after a detailed investigation. Commissioner of Police (CP) Amritsar, Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, confirmed that Suraj had been involved in multiple thefts, targeting NRIs. Stolen items recovered include £300, €600, ₹22,000, mobile phones, passports, ATM cards, and international ID cards, from victims visiting from the UK and Mauritius.
The Amritsar Police’s quick response has earned praise from the international community, particularly from the two victims, who expressed gratitude for the recovery of their stolen belongings.
